Pengo

Gameplay

The player can use the built in joystick or directional buttons on the mobile phone to move Pengo in all four directions. Pressing the middle button on the joystick will cause one of the following actions:
- When Pengo is standing in front of an ice block, and there is space behind it, Pengo will push the block which will slide until it hits a wall or another ice block. The ice block will crush any Snoobies as it slides and you will get even more points if more than one Snoobie is crushed with a single push.

- When you perform the push action on an ice block that is next to a wall or another ice block you will crush the block instead. At the start of the level any blocks containing hidden Snoobies will briefly flash. If the player crushes any of these blocks it will eliminate the Snoobie inside and this is one of the most effective ways of killing Snoobies.

- If the Pengo is facing a wall he will shake the wall briefly stunning any Snoobies next to it. Stunned Snoobies can be eliminated by just walking over them.

The player will progress to the next level when all of the Snoobies on the level are eliminated.
Diamond blocks are unbreakable however the player can get extra bonus points if they manage to align them all in a straight line.
When there is only one Snoobie left the player will have only 10 seconds  to finish the level.
There are 10 levels and each time the player plays the game, the placement of Snoobies is random so there are an unlimited number of mazes.
On the first level the player will only have two Snoobies at one time. Others will remain hidden. The amount of Snoobies in play at the same time will increase as the player advances through the levels up to a maximum of five Snoobies to deal with and many more hidden and waiting.

Scoring

The points gained for crushing Snoobies depends on how many are crushed in one push of an ice block:

  1. 400 for one Snoobie,
  2. 1,600 for two Snoobies and
  3. 3,200 for three or more.

Walking over a stunned Snoobie awards 100 points.
Crushing a block will award 30 points if it’s empty or 500 if a Snoobie is hidden inside.
For aligning three diamond blocks the player will get 10,000 or 5,000 points, depending on whether the diamonds are aligned in the middle of the screen or against the walls.
Once a level is completed, a bonus is awarded on how long it took to finish it:

  1. - 5,000 points for under 20 seconds
  2. - 2,000 points for between 20-29 seconds
  3. - 1,000 points for between 30-39 seconds
  4. - 500 points for between 40-49 seconds
  5. - 10 points for between 50-59 seconds
  6. - 0 points for over 1 minute

When the player reaches 30,000 points a bonus life is awarded. The player starts with 3 lives.

The game has a retro look and emulates a coin operated machine. To start the game the player has to “insert coins” by pressing 0 as many times as the amount of coins are needed.
To start a one or two player game the player has to press number 1 or 2 on their mobile keypad.
The two player game is the same as the one player game, just the players alternate turns on the same mobile phone when they lose a life.
Pressing number 3 will allow the player to change game options, pressing number 4 will display the help file, number 5 will show credits and number 6 will exit the game.

In the options menu the player can change the sound level (from 0 = off to 5 = 100%), difficulty level (hard and easy – which makes the game faster or slower), network game – not yet implemented, language (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Croatian).
Help displays short instructions on how to play the game.
All the options are automatically saved so the player does not have to spend time setting up the same options again and again every time the game is started.

Get Ready Screen                            Green cubes                                      Cornered

The game starts with a “GET READY” screen and after a few seconds the game starts. Cubes flash green for a few seconds to show the player where the Snoobies are hidden. Shortly after, the first Snoobies start to hatch and chase the player around the maze.
The pursuit algorithm (computer AI) is very effective and totally unpredictable. This makes the game fun to play time after time.
There are two kinds of Snoobies, normal green ones and the “angry” orange one. The orange one is more likely to crush the ice cubes.
On the top of the screen there is player one, high and player two scores, number of lives the current player has and the total number of Snoobies left to eliminate before you finish the level.
The current level is written at the bottom of the screen

Pengo is “dead”                                Pengo “pushed” the wall              Pengo collects a stunned Snoobie

When Pengo is caught by a Snoobie the player loses a life. The remaining Snoobies are hidden again and the level stays as it was when the player lost a life. In the one player game the game continues shortly after. In the two player game the next player has a turn.
When Pengo “pushes” the wall Snoobies are stunned. The player has a very short time to collect them or maybe just escape from a tricky position.

Pengo pushes the cube                                Pengo finds a hidden Snoobie    And gets 500pts – nice J

Hidden Snoobies are sitting ducks. For a very short time their location flashes at the start of the level. Trying to remember those hidden spots and later on crushing those blocks is probably the easiest way to kill Snoobies.

Diamonds almost aligned             Diamonds aligned                            Success, nice fat bonus!

Three diamond cubes can be aligned horizontally or vertically in the middle of the screen or against the wall. If the player manages to accomplish this they will get 10,000 or 5,000 bonus points. This sounds much easier then it is done.
The bonus screen again has a nice retro look.

Last Snoobie counter                     Not bad, 27 seconds                       Everything good has to end

If there is only one Snoobie left the player has 10 seconds to finish the level. After 10 seconds the last Snoobie disappears.
The player is not allowed to align three diamonds so easily.
At the end of the level the player will get a bonus depending on how quickly the level was finished.
As you can see Pengo mobile IS a very FAST game. That is what makes it so totally ADDICTIVE, making players play it over and over again.

Wow, high score!                             Do you have to call now?

The game remembers the top five scores. Again the method of entering high scores has an old arcade machine look and feel. The player uses left and right to select which letter to edit, up and down to change the letter and the middle button to enter the high score. High scores are saved on the phone.
Typically in the middle of 9th level the player’s mother in law will call. The game will automatically pause, and resume after the call is finished. So the player will not lose a life or be forced to start from the beginning.

Mobile phones supported
Pengo Mobile will work on any BlackBerry device with OS 4.2 or higher.

Conclusion
Pengo Mobile is a very fast, very addictive arcade game and is a guaranteed success.
All aspects of the game are carefully designed from the original graphics, retro look, intelligent AI (artificial intelligence) and addictive,  fast music – a techno / dance version of the classic Popcorn song.
Pengo Mobile also has upbeat tunes when starting the game, losing a life or getting a bonus, which adds to the amazing game play.
